THE SIMPLE PAST

OK......... the simple past refers to something that started and finished in the past.( el pasado simple nos hace refeerencia a eventos q empezaron y acabaron en el pasado)
- Whith regular verbs we add an "ed" at the end of the verb. Ex: "work"   in the past  "worked" ( Con los verbos regulares solo agregamos una "ed" al verbo)

- With the irregular verbs we change the verb( con los verbos irregulares el verbo cambia en el pasado)

have    in the past     had
go       in the past     went
do       in the past     did

Verb "BE"  in the past  was/were
was singular
were plural

When we use the third persons of the singular we DO NOT conjugate the verb we use the past form only.
(Cuando usamos las tres terceras personas del singular, el verbo nunca se conjuga, no existen las conjugaciones en el pasado, solo se usa la forma del verbo en pasado)

Affirmative sentences
To make afirmative sentences we need the simple past form of the verb. (Para las oraciones afirmativas necesitamos la forma en pasado del verbo).

SUBJECT + SIMPLE PAST + COMPLEMENT

I worked at the CBA last year.
(Yo trabaje en el CBA el año pasado) El evento empezo y termino en el pasado.

She had a cute cat when she was a baby.
They went to the park yesterday.
He did his homework last week.

Negative sentences

To make negative sentences we need the auxiliar "did" and the base form of the verb. ( En las oraciones negativas necesitamos el auxiliar did y la forma base del verbo).
Siempre que usemos auxiliares, el verbo no cambia.

SUBJECT + AUXILIAR + NOT + BASE FORM + COMPLEMENT

We DID NOT go to the party last night.
She DIDN'T have a cute cat.
You DIDN'T do your homework yesterday.

Yes / No questions

We need the auxiliar DID.

AUXILIAR + SUBJECT + BASE FORM + COMPLEMENT

DID you go to the party last night? ( fuiste a la fiesta de anoche?)
- Yes, I did.
- No, I didn't.

DID they work at the university last year?
- Yes, they DID.
- No, they DID NOT.

Information Questions

We need question words.

QUESTION WORD + AUXILIAR + SUBJECT + BASE FORM + COMPLEMENT

What did you eat yesterday?
- I ate fish yesterday.

Where did she go last weekend?
- She went to the square last weekend.

Realize that we use the base form of the verb in the question but we use the simple past form of the verb in the answer. ( Noten q usamos la forma base del verbo en las preguntas, pero usamos la forma del verbo en pasado para la respuesta)

REMEMBER IF WE USE AUXILIARS THE VERB DOES NOT CHANGE. ( SI USAMOS AUXILIARES, EL VERBO NO CAMBIA)

REMEMBER THE AUXILAR DID IS ONLY FOR THE SIMPLE PAST ( EL AUXILIAAR DID ES SOLO PARA EL SIMPLE PAST).
